Philip Morris International:
Delivering data-driven decisions through process-led transformation with SAP Signavio
PMI’s rapid expansion into new categories and global markets created a level of operational complexity that traditional ways of working could no longer sustain. Process documentation lived across Word files, Power point decks, local repositories, and disconnected tools, while process mining insights were isolated from process maps. This fragmentation made it difficult to understand how the business truly operated end-to-end, slowing decision-making and limiting PMI’s ability to scale AI-enabled capabilities.
The stakes were significant. Without a unified, data-driven view of its operations, PMI risked inefficiencies, inconsistent execution, and delays in delivering science-based, better alternatives to cigarettes at the scale the world demands. This realization sparked a bold shift: PMI launched a global program called Process-Led Transformation, aimed at re-architecting how processes are visualized, analyzed, governed, and improved across the enterprise.
PMI’s S2P operations were constrained by fragmented data, inconsistent automation metrics, and siloed process insights spread across multiple tools.
Without a unified, end-to-end view, teams struggled to make fast, reliable decisions—creating risks to scalability, governance, and transformation momentum.
The urgency intensified when PMI had just three months to migrate its existing process-mining solution, with the real possibility of losing critical insights needed to steer the S2P transformation.
PMI invested in the SAP Signavio Suite to anchor its process-led transformation and ensure unified, actionable insights across the S2P value chain. The first project is Project Pioneer focused on rapidly migrating the existing process-mining landscape, a critical solutions to support S2P transformation.
In partnership with IBM & SAP, the project started with discovery workshops to map personas, data models, and dashboard needs; built an integrated data pipeline connecting SAP ECC, Coupa, AWS S3, and Athena; and designed a composite source-data strategy aligned with SAP Signavio’s architecture. This foundation enabled reliable, scalable, end-to-end process intelligence from day one.
Over 65 dashboards covering the end-to-end purchase to invoice process delivered comprehensive visibility into all key KPIs. More than 1,500 widgets enabled global, cross-regional analysis with near real-time insights through daily data refreshes. Built-in notifications supported timely follow-ups, improving CSAT, on-time payments, and overall working capital.
