GM - Driving the world forward, together
Founded in 1908, the General Motors Company (GM) is a global automaker with US$187 billion in annual revenue and locations across six continents. Its brands include Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac, along with interests in Baojun and Wuling Motors.
GM envisions a future with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion. As it transitions from an automotive manufacturer to a technology platform provider, its growth portfolio encompasses electric and autonomous vehicles (EV/AV), models enabled with software that enhances the customer experience, and new business ventures leveraging its technology platform. AI-driven innovations form the foundation of GM’s platform strategy.
To deliver on its strategy of moving from an automotive manufacturer to a technology platform provider, GM needed to eliminate complexities and inefficiencies in its legacy systems. Disjointed data integration, long processing times, and an inflexible architecture created challenges that limited GM’s
ability to address the needs of the business quickly.
The company required a modern, simplified application strategy to streamline operations and enable AI-driven transformation. Achieving this vision depended on a cloud-based approach and a commitment to a clean core strategy.
GM selected the RISE with SAP journey, SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), and SAP Signavio solutions to modernize its business operations. Through a clean core strategy, RISE with SAP facilitated the migration of critical systems (including finance, product costing, vehicle profitability, incentives, and procurement) to the cloud, supporting 57 TB of data. SAP onboarded nearly a 100 GM developers to SAP Build to replace customizations and deploy new functionality.
SAP Datasphere streamlined data integration, automating data pipelines that transfer 30 billion records to Microsoft Azure Data Lake Storage.
GM is driving the future with a modern, AI-ready landscape that unlocks innovation and efficiency across its global operations. With 40% faster processing times, the company has streamlined its month-end close cycles as well as saving more than 1,000 hours daily in costing. Additionally, architecture modifications now take days instead of months, and key processes, such as credit rebilling, have been automated. Smooth data integration is fueling real-time insights and AI readiness, positioning GM to accelerate transformation and redefine what’s possible in the automotive industry.
