BPM Round-trip Engineering with SAPERION and Signavio

SAPERIONSAPERION AG announced ahead of CeBIT that its Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and Business Process Management (BPM) systems will be tightly integrated with the modeling solution from Signavio GmbH. This development will extend SAPERION's range of competencies in the direction of functional process management. The joint solution will help corporations tie together the tasks of organizing functional processes and then implementing those processes in their IT systems. The solution will reflect the benefits of round-trip engineering.

SAPERION AG possesses extensive customer and project experience in the field of process automation. Through collaboration with Signavio, the firm will now be able to offer its customers a cutting-edge solution for comprehensive process optimization. "SAPERION and Signavio are leading the way towards BPM round-trip engineering; we expect this to open up a new market," according to Dr. Martin Bartonitz, Product Manager at SAPERION.

Signavio GmbH manufactures a platform for graphical documentation and analysis of business processes. The completely Web-based process editor is one of the first tools to provide complete support for version 2.0 of the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) language. The standardized exchange format facilitates the transfer of the graphical models into the SAPERION system where they can be executed by the Workflow engine. By importing models from ARIS (IDS Scheer/Software AG), even existing process landscapes can be prepared for execution.

"It is essential for organizations of all sizes to fully understand and continuously improve their own processes. Doing this requires professional process management," according to Dr. Gero Decker, Managing Director of Signavio. The process editor originated from a research project conducted by the renowned Hasso-Plattner Institute and has been nominated for the Berlin-Brandenburg innovation award. Extensive documentation and simulation functions contained in the tool support organizational business process management. The solution can be obtained in the form of Software as a Service (SaaS) or as an in-house solution. Integration of participants into process configuration is designed to be very straightforward.

A prototype of the joint development will be shown to the public for the first time during SAPERION's 2010 Users' Convention, to be held in Berlin on April 28 (www.saperion.com/kongress2010en).

Visitors to CeBIT will have an early opportunity to gather information about the product (Hall 6, Booth 48).

Process execution with BPMN 2.0 and jBPM

jBPM_Signavio_logo_340Red Hat and Signavio present the world's first integration of process modeling and process execution tools based on BPMN 2.0. Process models that are created using the Signavio Process Editor can now be executed directly in the Jboss jBPM process engine.

From graphical models to automation - and back. The jBPM team and Signavio are realizing this vision together. An integration through so called jPDL files is possible since August 2009 already. These files are automatically generated out of BPMN diagrams. On the other hand, jPDL files that were edited manually can be visualized using BPMN and modified using the graphical editor.

Red Hat and Signavio now go one step further: Interchange between process modeling at the business level and technical execution happens through BPMN 2.0 as of today. That way, graphical model and the XML process definition are even closer.

The OMG specified the XML format in the newest version of the popular BPMN standard. All diagram elements and relationships between them are captured, as well as technical attributes that are necessary for execution. Signavio launched the world's first comprehensive modeling environment for BPMN 2.0 at the OMG Information Days in December 2009. Now Jboss jBPM supports the execution of BPMN 2.0.

It is a world premiere that a graphical BPMN 2.0 model can be automated directly - without further technical refinements.

You will find more information about the integration as well as a video in Joram Barrez' blog. He is one of the main developers of jBPM.

Whitepaper: From EPC to BPMN

Event-driven process chains (EPC) are still widely used for process modeling. The Signavio Process Editor supports this notation and offers a smooth import for existing EPC models from ARIS® repositories.

Given the increasing interest in BPMN, many organizations are currently evaluating whether they should switch to BPMN. The main argument often is that BPMN is an international standard that is supported by a large number of software vendors and consultants. Improved business-IT-alignment is often cited as well.

Depending on how much effort has already been spent on EPC modeling, organizations have to make up their minds how existing EPC models can be transformed to BPMN. We have tackled this topic in our article "Migrating from EPC to BPMN" (in German). The work resulted from a close collaboration with Prof. Puchan from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. The article discusses which constructs can easily be mapped, where there are multiple mapping options and where semantics would get lost when mapping.

Are you interested in switching from EPC to BPMN? Then please do not hesitate to contact us.
